Merkel's party lost the elections in Germany

In Germany, parliamentary elections were held, and votes have been counted.

The Social Democratic Party (SPD) won them, gaining 25.7% of the vote, according to preliminary data from the country's Federal Election Commission. The exit polls showed the victory of the Social Democrats earlier.

The second place still belongs to Angela Merkel’s native CDU / CSU bloc, they were supported by 24.1% of voters. The Greens won the support of 14.8%, the Free Democratic Party (FDP) - 11.5%, Alternative for Germany - 10.3%. Also, the party "Left" will enter parliament, which managed to gain only 4.9%, but received three direct mandates – two in Berlin and one in Leipzig.

For the first time in 16 years, parliamentary elections in Germany were held without the participation of the current German Chancellor Angela Merkel. She resigned from the leadership of the Christian Democratic Union in 2018 and announced her retirement from politics at the end of her fourth term as chancellor. The CDU / CSU bloc showed the worst result in federal elections in the history of the conservative bloc, Deutsche Welle notes.
