Sunak told lawmakers in U.K. Parliament that the government budget “delivers a stronger economy for the British people, stronger growth, with the UK recovering faster than its major competitors.” In an upbeat Budget speech, he said the UK economy had not been hit as hard by the Covid pandemic as expected. He said unemployment had not hit the levels feared at the height of the pandemic - but inflation was set to rise further, from 3.1% to 4% over the next year.
Much of his Budget had been pre-announced, including an end to the public sector pay freeze and an increase to the National Living Wage from £8.91 per hour to £9.50.
